The Southern Beltway

Connecting I-4 and SR 429 near the attractions to Florida’s Turnpike and SR 417 near Orlando International Airport

A Growing Region

Central Florida is one of the fastest-growing regions in the state, and the southern part of our region is leading that growth. Combined, Orange, Osceola and Polk counties are projected to have nearly 3.7 million residents by 2050 – an increase of nearly 1 million people.

For decades, the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) has been proactively planning – in partnership and collaboration with local government leaders – for this growth. The long-term vision now taking shape is the Southern Beltway. This comprehensive system of nearly 60 miles of new expressway corridors will improve regional connectivity to major roads including Interstate 4, Florida’s Turnpike and State Road 417.

Southern Beltway timeline

The Southern Beltway is composed of the SR 538 Poinciana Parkway and a planned extension, the SR 538 Southport Connector Expressway, the SR 515 Northeast Connector Expressway, and SR 534. The system will feature crucial, local road improvements including on County Road 532, Cypress Parkway and Simpson Road.

In tandem with projects being conducted by our regional partners, the Southern Beltway will enhance mobility and the overall quality of life by providing additional travel options to the existing local road network. The new expressways will help to relieve congestion on local roads, enhance evacuation and emergency response, and support economic development.

The Southern Beltway represents the region’s toll dollars at work, which is a significant investment made possible by the drivers who use and fund our expressway system today. Approximately 40% of CFX’s $4.2 billion Five-Year Work Plan is committed to connecting these communities to the rest of Central Florida. The system will accommodate long-term travel needs, ensuring the region remains accessible, competitive, and well-positioned for generations to come.
